Watch: Who is Ramon Planes? Meet the man who signed Pedri and Araujo

If there’s one thing Barcelona have severely lacked at times up front this season, it is a lack of clinicality in front of goal. On multiple occasions, the Catalans have seemed almost allergic to shooting when an opportunity presents itself. Many a chance has gone begging, as the desire to oversimplify has so often had exactly the opposite effect.

And this is where Ansu Fati’s absence is missed most sorely. The winger’s knack for knowing where the goalmouth is, massively benefits the team. At the first sighter, Fati instinctively knows when to pull the trigger, and he is a very sound finisher already at such a young age. This only adds to his tremendous arsenal of technical abilities which allow Barcelona to fashion plenty of chances in the first place.

Fati has been sidelined since November of 2020, after he sustained significant damage to the internal meniscus of his left knee. Following the injury, he underwent surgery immediately, which had initially ruled him out till March. However, the youngster has faced multiple setbacks during his recovery process. Repeated swelling has not allowed Fati do anything aside from targeted gym work.

There have been reports, albeit disputed, that he has already undergone another surgery and that the possibility of another procedure is not entirely ruled out. Lately however, Barcelona seem to have received some positive news on the front of his recovery.

Fati did not initially respond well to the biological regenerative treatment that was outlined for him by Dr Ramon Cugat, who also performed the first surgery on the winger under the supervision of Barcelona’s medical team. Now however, Dr Cugat continues to advise him as he is finally taking steps in the right direction. He is now working with light loads before initially making the transition to training with the rest of the squad on the pitch.

Newer reports now state that the possibility of another operation can slowly be ruled out, which is positive news for both club and player. Fati has already received the assurance of president Joan Laporta regarding his continuity and that the club fully backs him during this tough recovery period.

It still looks as though the teenager, alongside midfielder Philippe Coutinho, who is suffering from a similar knee injury, will be unable to make a return to action this season. This means of course, that there is now plenty of time for Fati to recuperate and regain his fitness before hopefully rejoining the team in preseason.

In the ten games Fati played in all competitions this season prior to his injury, the Spaniard hailing from Guinea-Bissau managed to score five goals and provide four assists. It is no surprise that he established himself as an important first-team member at such a young age. His quality is impossible to neglect and subsequently, it is dearly missed when he is unavailable. Hopefully the 18-year old can get back to his best as soon as possible, avoiding any more setbacks.
