Reports from Sport claim that a move for Sergio Aguero to Barcelona is getting closer and closer in the upcoming summer transfer window. The 32-year-old striker earlier has announced his departure from Manchester City, with Barça being a likely destination for him. Additionally, the Catalan club’s lack of a proper ‘number nine’ makes a free transfer of Aguero into the club a very sensible one.
An accomplished striker
Aguero has performed tremendously for ten seasons in the Premier League and will surely perform spectacularly for Barça, given that he can remain fit. In 385 appearances for City, the Argentine striker has scored 257 goals and assisted an additional 73.
With the Premier League striker’s contract ending this summer, he has long been linked with a transfer to Barça. A reunion with his fellow Argentinian teammate and best friend Lionel Messi seems to be on the cards.
Barça’s need for a striker
Reports claim that the Blaugrana are once again interested in signing the striker as the club see the signing of a Number Nine as a priority. Barça have lacked the ferocity they once had in abundance in front of goal. This is largely because the club has been making do without the services of a proper striker, with several players such as Fati, Braithwaite, and Griezmann filling in this role.
Laporta’s two conditions for the signing
It seems that Laporta and his board are only interested in signing the 32-year-old striker if two conditions are met. According to Cuatro, the President wants to ensure that Aguero is willing to come into the club only if he is willing to take a pay cut.
In fact, according to the report, Aguero will have to accept a salary that is half of what he currently receives at City. Additionally, the Premier League winner will also have to accept a new role at Barça; a role which entails that he may not always be a starter. If these two conditions are met, it is believed that the board prioritises his signing over that of Memphis Depay.
Nonetheless, it is crucial that the Catalan club secure a striker, as breaking defensive lines in a direct and vertical approach is key in dismantling defences. Without a presence in between central defenders, Barça have found it very difficult to break low blocks.
A player such as Aguero can offer very intelligent movement and change of direction in breaking defensive lines. Additionally, he has a phenomenal killer instinct in front of the goal. He can add north of thirty goals a season to the Blaugrana, which could change their whole season’s fortune.
