According to reports from Mundo Deportivo, the situation regarding Sergi Roberto’s continuation at Barcelona has changed. With the 29-year old’s contract expiring in 2022, there were questions about whether he would stay on a short-term basis or be sold this summer.
Now, Barça have reportedly shifted their stance, and are more in favor of selling Roberto rather than extending his deal. Consequently, the club and Roberto’s representatives will meet soon.
Due to the Catalans’ financial struggles, Joan Laporta and his team have stressed the importance of effectively managing contracts and wages. With the intention of not extending Roberto’s contract, cashing in on him now rather than letting him walk for free next summer is an attractive option.
Roberto has been a staple for the Blaugrana for almost half a decade. Whether as a full-back or midfielder, he has made over 300 appearances for his boyhood club. But, with the emergence of Sergiño Dest and arrival of Emerson Royal, the right-back spot is as secure as its been in a while.
Additionally, the club has plenty of midfield depth, although they admittedly missed out on signing free-agent Gini Wijnaldum.
If Barcelona look to offload Roberto, a player of his versatility, experience, and caliber will have no shortage of suitors. In fact, Pep Guardiola and Manchester City are allegedly interested in acquiring his services, and an intriguing swap deal could follow.
In all, we are only in the early stages of the summer transfer market, and there will be plenty of rumors and changes to come.
