While speaking to L’Equipe, Paris Saint-Germain president Nasser al-Khelaifi has opened up about Barcelona’s pursuit to try and sign Neymar back as well as the Parisiens’ links to Lionel Messi, who has been the central figure of one of the most talked about transfer sagas in football history.
After the infamous burofax incident following Barcelona’s disastrous end to the 2019-20 season, Messi seemed almost certain to make his way out of Spain. However, after a season of transition in 2020-21, the Argentine seems to have rediscovered the joy of wearing Blaugrana.
During the exit rumours, PSG seemed to be in pole position to secure Messi’s services after his contract with Barcelona ends on the 30th of June. The Ligue One giants reportedly even offered him a contract a few weeks ago. But with the Argentine then edging closer to a renewal, all speculation seems to have died down.
In the interview, however, al-Khelaifi was not entirely dismissive of the rumours: “I’m not talking about ongoing negotiations, as I said. Besides, I told the Barcelona president that Messi was at the end of his contract and that all clubs have the right from January 1 to talk with him.”
“What I can tell you is that all the great players want to come to PSG but it’s not possible to bring everyone here. Messi is a fantastic player,” he added.
About the Neymar saga, he confirmed Barcelona’s approaches, saying: “We turned down an offer from Barcelona for Neymar and they tried until the end. I think they have economic problems, but they are not our problems. Neymar believes in our project, he loves the city, the fans.”
Could al-Khelaifi’s words mean that there is life in this signing story yet? With Messi currently with Argentina preparing for the Copa America, only he will be able to put speculation regarding his future to bed. As of now, it looks like he is leaning towards staying put at Barcelona.
