Pep Guardiola has become to Barcelona what Cristiano Ronaldo was to Manchester United. Each year, he is linked with a move back to the Catalan capital nine years after leaving. He is regularly asked about moving to Barça, and it seems each time the media forget his response and goes on the same parade all over again.
In an interview with Què T’hi Jugues, the former Barcelona coach answered several doubts relating to his old club, including the signings of Eric Garcia and Sergio Aguero, a possible return, and Ronald Koeman’s continuity. About the Dutchman, he said, “It’s good news that Koeman will continue. In many moments, Barça have played the best football in Spain. And the second seasons are usually better.”
It is well-documented that Koeman took charge when the chips were extremely low for Barça and the pressure was monumental. Guardiola acknowledged the same, suggesting that continuing with his ex-teammate was a good decision, “Koeman is the ideal coach for next season. I’m very happy and the president is convinced. It’s been a tough year for everyone and Ronald deserves another year, with people in the stadium.”
The discussion moved towards two players who have departed the Manchester City camp this season for a move to Barcelona – Eric Garcia and Kun Aguero. On the two signings, he said, “Agüero and Eric Garcia are two great signings, total successes. Kun is a goal scorer, with Eric I already told Koeman that he has made a spectacular signing, he’s a jewel, very intelligent. He’ll be one of the captains of the next decade.”
Finally, when asked if there was any substance to rumours linking him back to Barcelona, he replied, “I have a two-year contract in Manchester. I’m happy and it will continue to be so.”
