Official: La Liga release statement condemning the creation of the European Super League

La Liga have just released a statement in which they have strongly condemned the creation of the European Super League, announced last night.

The Super League is a competition format aiming to replace the UEFA Champions League. The idea is to have a permanent list of 15 founding clubs, who will receive anywhere between €100m-€350m for simply agreeing to join the ESL. This money will be debt-financed by American banking giant JP Morgan, who are on board with the creation of the Super League.

Contrary to the Champions League, the ESL will see a closed circuit of 15 clubs, with 12 of these clubs having been officially confirmed, including the likes of Barça, Real Madrid, Manchester City, and other giants. Additionally, five clubs will qualify every year based on domestic competitions.

Such a league aims to be elitist, as it solely favours the financial gain of a select few giants in Europe. Clubs such as Madrid and Barça have taken a very strong financial hit due to the pandemic, with their massive revenue streams reducing tremendously. Thus, Florentino Perez has opted to accelerate the formation of the ESL in order to favour the big teams in Europe.

However, such a league goes against the very meritocratic nature of football, stripping away opportunities for smaller clubs to compete on a European stage. By creating a closed circuit in European competition, clubs that are not a part of the founding basis do not have the opportunities to compete on the biggest stage. In fact, if this competition were to be formed, we may never see wonderful campaigns such as those of Ajax in 18/19, or Porto’s Champions League-winning campaign in 2003/04.

La Liga have released their own statement on the ESL, condemning it very strongly. “LaLiga strongly condemns the announced proposal to create an elitist European competition, which attacks the principles of open competitiveness and sporting merit that occupy the deepest part of the national and European football ecosystem.

La Liga is strongly opposed to the idea that European dominance can be permanently shared between 15 clubs and that too on a non-meritocratic basis.

Today, football fans across Europe can dream that their Club, whatever its size, can excel in competition, reach the top, and compete at the pinnacle of European football.

LaLiga defends this European football tradition of football for everyone. The concept proposed by 12 European clubs destroys that dream, closing the door to the top of European football and allowing the entry of only a few to an elite.

We will use all the tools at our disposal and we will work with all parties involved to defend the integrity and future of Spanish football in the best interest of the game.
