Barcelona superstar and Argentine talisman Lionel Messi took time out during a training session to speak in front of the cameras of the Argentina Football Association (AFA), ahead of the Albiceleste’s upcoming Copa America campaign and the World Cup qualifiers.
The entire tournament in under a shadow of uncertainty as CONMEBOL have released a statement saying that Argentina will not be able to host the tournament in light of current events, with the ever-rising number of COVID-19 cases putting proceedings into jeopardy.
However, they are evaluating the offers of other countries aside from Argentina, such as the United States, who have shown interest in hosting Copa America. Messi, however, gave the interview stating his enthusiasm to play the tournament and the World Cup qualifiers just a few hours before the news of Argentina being unable to host broke out.
“I’m happy to be here again with all the boys. The truth is that it is a strange situation, different for all that we have to live. We are working to prepare the two qualifying matches that are very difficult,” he said.
About their upcoming qualifier against Chile, he said: “It will be very tough, as are all qualifying matches. Chile is a very great team that has very good player. It is a growing and very competitive team.”
Messi then concluded saying that he wants to build on their last Copa result with the team: “I’m very excited, eager to do things well. I think that in the last Copa América we left a good image, but obviously we cannot stay with that and we want to continue growing.”
