Barcelona target three Manchester City stars

According to a report from ESPN, Barcelona have not stopped with their Manchester City swoop, as they are currently targeting three additional players after already having signed Sergio Aguero and Eric Garcia as free agents.

The first of these players is Aymeric Laporte. The 27-year-old Spanish National is a very experienced centre-back who has achieved great success with the Cityzens. He is left-footed, meaning that he could fulfill a much-depleted role at the Catalan club.

In addition, he has been partially ostracised at City this season, as John Stones and Ruben Dias have been ahead of the former French National in Guardiola’s pecking order.

Laporte is a world-class centre-back, and he will certainly be hoping for more playing time than he earned throughout last season. In search of this, he may well be looking for a new club, and Barça could be a premier destination for him.

The next Cityzen on Barcelona’s radar is the Brazilian striker Gabriel Jesus. The 24-year-old has suffered reduced prominence in City this year, and is currently studying offers from other clubs. The Blue and Garnet, who have lacked a striker all season, are potentially in the race to sign the Brazilian forward.

However, having signed Sergio Aguero (and most likely Memphis Depay), it is difficult to imagine Joan Laporta and co seriously entertaining the possibility of signing Jesus.

The final target from City for the Blaugranas is Ilkay Gundogan. The German national has been totally stellar throughout last season, having registered 17 goals and 5 assists to his name. It was the best season of his professional career yet, and at 30-years-old, he has well and truly entered his prime.

With Georginio Wijnaldum having snubbed Barça for a move to Paris-Saint Germain instead, the Blaugranas are looking for alternative options in midfield to bring to the Camp Nou. Gundogan may be the best of these options, as he has excelled in a team that plays positional play under Pep Guardiola — a system similar to Barça’s own.

Gundogan possesses a high level of dexterity, positional intelligence, and versatility. However, it is likely that signing the German national will come at no small cost, meaning it is not entirely a realistic option for Barcelona to consider.

Additionally, given the phenomenal season he has had, Gundogan is settled in Manchester, and will definitely enjoy another season of prominence under Guardiola’s guidance. A move away for him seems redundant from his point of view.,

Time will show how all three operations will evolve, but it is clear that Barcelona are desperately in need of reinforcements, especially considering that each of the transfer targets are playing in different positions.
