Barcelona’s pursuit of free agents in the summer comes out a place of need as the club’s finances continues to plummet. Sergio Aguero and Eric Garcia have already been announced as Barcelona players, with the signing of Memphis Depay and possibly Gianluigi Donnarumma imminent. If reports from Fichajes are to be believed, Barça have already contacted AC Milan midfielder Hakan Calhanoglu, who becomes a free agent at the end of June.
Calhanoglu enjoyed a spectacular season with Milan, where they led the Serie A for most of the season and only falling down the order in the final third of the campaign. The Turk was at the heart of it all as their primary creator, racking up 98 chances created — more than anyone across the top 5 leagues.
Despite boasting of an incredible midfield in the form of Frenkie de Jong, Sergio Busquets, Pedri, Ilaix Moriba, Miralem Pjanic, and Riqui Puig, Barcelona are interested in signing another midfielder in the summer. Georginio Wijnaldum was linked to the club for a long time, but it seems he has turned tides and is, instead, on his way to Paris Saint-Germain now.
Barcelona’s midfield is quite well balanced, but Busquets has to carry the creative burden more often than not from relatively deeper positions. Calhanoglu will be able to add that to the trident. Not to mention, Pedri and de Jong are often reluctant to shoot, with Messi carrying the goal-scoring threat from long-range. This is where Calhanoglu can come in handy as well, given his history as one of Europe’s finest from outside the box.
Milan are trying to negotiate a new contract with the 27-year-old, with Liverpool hot on the trails for a creative presence in their midfield as well. It could be a fascinating next couple of weeks for Barça, who are chasing multiple players.
