According to multiple reports, including one from ESPN, and confirmed by Fabrizio Romano, Barcelona’s signing of Gini Wijnaldum is not going to be as smooth sailing as it looked. Paris Saint-Germain have now entered race to sign the Dutchman in a bid to hijack the move.
Over the past week Barcelona have been in close contact with the midfielder, and his signing seemed almost imminent, with a contract in place until 2024. He would join the club on a free transfer from Liverpool, where his deal is set to expire this month.
Now, it looks like Paris Saint-Germain are trying to lure Wijnaldum away from the Catalans, by offering him a far more lucrative deal than Barcelona and are currently waiting from an answer to finalise the paperwork. A massive twist in the tale, especially after president Joan Laporta already stated that another signing is to be announced in the coming days.
Barcelona have, in fact, already planned the medical tests for Wijnaldum and are also in turn, waiting for an answer from the Liverpool man. Laporta’s statements about a signing could also be alluding to fellow Dutchman Memphis Depay, who is also close to signing for the Blaugrana.
Wijnaldum has had a host of clubs show interest in him. Before Barcelona launched their bid for him, there was also reported contact from Bayern Munich, and now PSG are in the mix. Given Barcelona’s tight finances, it is certain that they cannot compete with the lucrative deal PSG have offered.
It will come down to a matter of preference for Wijnaldum, who has been on Ronald Koeman’s wishlist as well. Time will tell if that will play a part very soon. Barcelona fans have been uncertain about the Dutchman’s arrival either way.
