The Barcelona offices have been visibly busy since dawn finalizing certain key transfers ahead of the 2021-22 season. However, overshadowed by the flurry of reports concerning arrivals is a development in the future of Juan Miranda.
Miranda has been playing on loan at Real Betis from the 5th of July 2020. During his yearlong stint at Los Verdeblancos, the left-back has started 18 league games. He has been impressive in defence, averaging 1.3 interceptions, 1.2 tackles and two clearances per 90. Miranda has also registered a goal and two assists.
As per reports from Mundo Deportivo earlier today, FC Barcelona have decided against renewing the La Masia graduate’s contract for two seasons. Shockingly, they will also shell out 600,000 euros as compensation to the defender.
Needless to say, at first sight, the affair does seem hasty. Barcelona are not only letting the youngster leave on a free transfer but also paying a significant amount for the deal to go through.
The decision could imply a few conclusions. It could be a desperate measure to eliminate all future economic liabilities by making a stitch in time. Removing the player’s name from the books immediately helps clear up space in the roster, and also expand the budget.
However, one expects such a deal to come with an immediate benefit for the Catalans. It is highly possible that facilitating Miranda’s move to Betis on a free open up benefits in Emerson’s potential move to Catalonia. Whether that comes as a reduction in fee or in some other form remains to be seen.
As it stands, Miranda will sign a contract with Real Betis for three seasons. Barcelona’s good relations with the Andalusian side will ensure that they keep a percentage of any future sale in the coming years.
